Egypt's ex-President Hosni Mubarak during the retrial |
During the session on Saturday, 11 May 2013, presiding judge Mahmoud
Kamel El-Rashidi has announced that the proceedings in the retrial of Egypt’s
ex-President Hosni Mubarak will be postponed till the next month. The retrial
is expected to be started at 8th of June.
The retrial of Mubarak’s Interior Minister Habib El-Adly and six his
aides and also the retrial of Mubarak’s sons Gamal and Alaa were also
postponed.
This decision was taken due to the new evidences and materials appeared
in the case. There is reported to be some 55,000 pages of documentation for the
judges to review, that’s why the retrial session was postponed.
Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s ousted President, and his Interior Minister Habib
El-Adly along with other six aides have already faced the trial and have been
convicted in June 2012 to life in prison accused of failing to prevent the
killings of hundreds of unarmed protesters during January 25 Revolution. But
later, in January 2013, the retrial was granted for Egypt’s ex-President, Habib
El-Adly and other high ranking figures.
Hosni Mubarak along with his aides is facing the charges of failing to
prevent the killing of the protesters, corruption charges and also accusations
if the trade of natural gas to Israel at the below-market prices.
Mubarak’s sons Gamal and Alaa will also face retrial in the corruption
charges.
The session on Saturday, 11 May, which was held at the Police Academy at
New Cairo, was relatively calm. There have been less numbers of people gathering
in front of the Academy, and police forces have also separated the supporters
of Hosni Mubarak and the families of the protesters killed during the
Revolution.
Egypt’s ex-President Hosni Mubarak who recently
turned 85 is currently at Tora Prison, where he was transferred from the
military hospital due to the order of Judge.
