Egypt: Court postponed Morsi's espionage case verdict

Cairo Criminal Court has postponed the verdict of Egypt's ex-President Mohamed Morsi in the espionage case trial during the 23 April session. The verdict was postponed to 7 May.

Egypt's ousted Islamist backed President Mohamed Morsi is facing trial for several cases including the Qatar espionage case. Mr. Morsi, who is currently being held in the prison in the coastal city of Alexandria, was accused by the Prosecution General of using his presidential position to leak the secret and classified documents and sensitive information to Qataris with the assistance of his secretaries and some influential Muslim Brotherhood figures.

Defense team of Egypt’s ousted Islamist backed President Mohamed Morsi filed an appeal against his death sentence in the so called “Wadi Al-Natroun prison break case” on Saturday, 15 August.

On 16 May 2015 Cairo Criminal Court ruled a death sentence to Mohamed Morsi in a case of his prison break in January 2011, during the popular January 25 uprising. Court issued preliminary death sentence for Mohamed Morsi and 105 other co-defendants. Prosecution charged them with a prison break, murder, an attempted murder of security personnel, looting of the prison’s weapons depot, setting fire to buildings and releasing the prisoners.

Cairo Court has issued on Tuesday, 16 June, two verdicts in the cases against Egypt’s former Islamist backed President Mohamed Morsi and several others prominent members of Muslim Brotherhood as well.

Thus, Egypt’s Court has confirmed the death sentences for Mohamed Morsi in the Wadi Al-Natroun prison break case and sentenced Egypt’s former head to life in prison in the espionage case.

Cairo Criminal Court has issued on Saturday, 16 May, a preliminary death sentence to Egypt’s Islamist backed President Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted as a result of the massive protests held in June and July 2013 and is currently facing trials on several charges. Mohamed Morsi is the first Egyptian President who received the death sentence and can be executed if the court will confirm this verdict.

Mohamed Morsi was sentenced to death in the so called Natroun prison break case and accused along with other 105 co-defendants of jailbreak, murder and attempted murder, looting prison’s weapons depots, damaging prison’s buildings and setting fire on them and releasing prisoners, among them many members of Muslim Brotherhood, Gaza based Hamas movement, Lebanon based Hezbollah and other jihadists and criminals held in the Natroun prison, located in Northern Sinai. The jailbreak occurred in the wake of January 25 Revolution 2011.

An Egyptian Criminal Court has sentenced Egypt’s former Islamist backed President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in jail during the Court’s session on Wednesday, 21 April. Mohamed Morsi and 14 other co-defendants were accused of ordering arrest and imprisonment and the following of tortures of protesters and journalists during his rule.

Mohamed Morsi was overthrown by the decree of Egypt’s Armed Forces in 2013 after massive nationwide protests against his rule. Mohamed Morsi was arrested and put in the prison in the coastal city of Alexandria and he faced trial on several charges including ties and cooperation with foreign militants to plan and carry out prison break and organizing of escape of jailed jihadists and Islamists from the prison during the protests of January 22 revolution in 2011.
