At least 41 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a deadly suicide bombing in the
small city of Iskandereyah, about 40 kilometers south of Iraqi capital Baghdad.
An attack took place on Friday, 25 March, at about 7 p.m. local time.
Eyewitnesses and
local officials report that the suicide bomber blew himself up in the middle of
a crowd in the park, right after the amateur football game. The trophies were
just given to the winners, when the suicide bomber detonated his vest with explosives.
Medical
officials confirmed the death toll and said it could rise due to the serious
injuries.
ISIS (Islamic
State) has claimed the responsibility for this bombing immediately after the
attack. Statement of the jihadist group appeared on its local Amaq news agency,
which is affiliated to the terrorist group.
ISIS has been
waging numerous suicide bombings and attacks in Iraq and Syria recently,
including the area in and around the city of Baghdad, as Iraqi military forces
continue fighting the terrorist group, attempting to push it back from the
previously captured territories.
The latest
deadly attack occurred in Baghdad earlier this month, when more than 60 people
were killed in a suicide bombing in the city of Hilla, nearly 80 kilometers to
the south from Baghdad. And explosive laden fuel tanker slammed then into the
Iraqi military checkpoint.
