Ukrainian Head of National Security and Defense Council Andrey Klyuev
has recently visited Brussels in order to meet with several European leaders in
attempt to discuss some questions regarding the cooperation between Ukraine and
European Union and the upcoming possible signing of the Association Agreement.
Though one of the main issues of the meeting was the issue of Yulia Tymoshenko,
Ukrainian ex-Prime Minister, currently imprisoned. EU representatives and Mr.
Klyuev have been discussing the case of Mrs. Tymoshenko and the possible way of
resolving this problem, according to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of
Ukraine Andrey Olefirov.
Mr. Olefirov has also mentioned that there is a special mechanism of the
negotiations existing in the issue of Yulia Tymoshenko. In particular those
mechanisms include the visits to Ukraine of the ex-Presidents Aleksander Kwaśnewski
and Patrick Cox.
The negotiations are ongoing and this problem should be resolved with
the help of the coordination and dialogue between the Ukrainian and European
leaders, added Mr. Olefirov.
The visit of Mr. Kwaśnewski and Mr. Cox to the latest Yalta forum was dedicated
to discussion of this issue too, according to the Deputy of Minister of Foreign
Affairs.
We would remind here that the issue of Ukrainian
ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her imprisonment are among the main
obstacles of Ukrainian association with EU as this situation signalizes for
European countries Ukrainian judicial system has some serious problems to be
resolved and the political oppression and selective justice should be
eliminated. EU and USA leaders have been demanding release of Yulia Tymoshenko
as her case considered being the sign of serious problems with democracy and
human rights in Ukraine.
