Egypt’s ex-President Hosni Mubarak deposed after 18-days uprising in
2011 was officially released by the court’s order on Wednesday, 21 August 2013,
after his release appeal.
Egypt’s long standing President Hosni Mubarak was facing the trial in
the case of failing to prevent the killing of the peaceful demonstrators during
January 25 Revolution in 2011. He faced the trial together with his ex-Minister
of Interior Habib El-Adly and six his aides. In addition to that Hosni Mubarak
along with two his sons, Gamal and Alaa, is also facing the trial in several
corruption cases as well.
In June 2011 Hosni Mubarak was declared guilty and received the life in
prison sentence, but this court decision was appealed, and in 2012 Mr. Mybarak,
Habib El-Adly and six high ranking officials were granted the retrial due to
the new evidences and information in the case and also due to some
irregularities during the first trial.

Hosni Mubarak is still facing the case in which he is accused of killing
the peaceful protesters. In addition to that there are still several corruption
charges remaining while some other cases decreased, and Egypt’s ex-President
was found not guilty.
Hosni Mubarak was also granted release from the custody in several cases
due to the secession of the maximum term which the defendant can spend in the
detention pending investigation. This was the main reason for his lawyer to
appeal for Mr. Mubrak’s release in the case of killing the protesters. The same
occurs in case of the corruption charges as well.
Thus, Egypt’s Court ordered the release of Hosni Mubarak, though he
still remains under investigation and may face trials in the court cases
against him.
Egypt’s interim Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawy has issued the order on
Wednesday’s night for Hosni Mubarak to be held under house arrest during the
period of investigations and trials. In addition to that Egypt’s ex-President
was put in the travel ban lists and he cannot leave Egypt. All of his assets
and bank accounts have been also frozen.

On Thursday, 22 August, Hosni Mubarak has left Cairo’s Tora Prison and
was transferred to Maadi Military Hospital, after his own request. Egypt’s
ex-President was guarded by military and security forces during the
transportation to the military hospital. Military helicopter was circling above
the area in order to keep safety. A few dozens of supporters of Egypt’s deposed
President have also gathered in from of Tora Prison to support Hosni Mubarak.
Meanwhile the situation in Egypt remains tense
with the ongoing crisis between Egypt’s military, current government and Islamists.
In addition to that, the release of Hosni Mubarak has also sparked some
negative reactions and comments despite the fact that the former President
remains under house arrest and also under strict security in the hospital. The
fact of release of Hosni Mubarak can possibly provoke anger and more tensions
in Egyptian society, according to some analysts.
