Egypt’s
Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat was injured in a car bomb attack on Sunday,
29 June, as his convoy was hit in Heliopolis, Cairo, near the Heliopolis
Military Academy, according to MENA and Al-Ahram Arabic.
An explosive
device was placed in one of the security vehicles of Hisham Barakat’s convoy.
An explosion occurred when Prosecutor General was leaving his residence in
Cairo’s upscale district Heliopolis. Eyewitnesses say they’ve heard a loud
sound of a blast, watched through the windows and saw a motorcycle in fire and several
cars set ablaze.
Health Ministry
spokesperson Abdel Ghaffar said that Hesham Barakat sustained injuries and was
transported to Al-Nozha Hospital, where he is being treated. There are currently conflicting reports about his condition.
Three other
persons were also seriously injured in an attack, among them two officers from Barakat’s
convoy and one civilian. All of them were also transported to the hospital.

Police and
Security forces have sealed an area, as the experts work on the scene.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility
