Mohamed Samir,
official spokesperson of Egypt’s Armed Forces, has issued an official statement
regarding the latest developments of the state Armed Forces raid carried out in
Northern Sinai region during 20-30 April.
According to the
official military statement Egypt’s security forces and army have carried out
military campaigns in Rafah, El-Arish and Sheikh Zuweid areas, targeting
numerous militants’ bases and hideouts and damaging at least 51 locations and
militants’ facilities.
At least 29b
alleged militants were reportedly killed as a result of the military raids in
North Sinai, while 133 jihadists were reported to be arrested.
In addition to
that 34 military vehicles and more than 90 motorcycles of the militants were
also destroyed during the military operations. Armed Forces personnel also
detonated several bombs planted by the militants.
Egypt’s Armed
Forces regularly carry out military operations and raids in North Sinai aimed
at targeting Sinai based terrorist groups and jihadists’ networks, including
one of the biggest and the most influential Egyptian based groups, Ansar Beit
Al-Maqdis, that claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks against
Egyptian military and police forces in Sinai and attacks of civilians in several
Egyptian cities including Cairo. Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis also pledged allegiance
to Islamic State.
Terrorist
attacks and bombings, targeting army and police personnel, happen regularly in
Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula after ouster of the Islamist backed President
Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Egyptian military carried out several massive
military operations against the terrorist groups in the region and continues
the raids in order to eliminate terrorist activity and to restore peace, safety
and security.
