EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan
Füle declared on Sunday, 15 December, that EU suspends negotiations’ process
and preparation for the signing of Association Agreement with Ukraine. European
official posted this statement also on his Twitter page.
According to Mr. Füle the main reason for this decision are huge
discrepancies and differences between the words and statements of Ukrainian
government regarding the process of European integration and their actual
steps and deeds.
In addition to that Mr. Füle said, that arguments of Ukrainian Prime Minister
Mykola Azarov and other high officials regarding refusal to sign an Agreement
have nothing to do with reality.
Mr. Füle had a conversation with Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Sergiy
Arbuzov in Brussels and he has shared these statements with him during the
official meeting. The further negotiations regarding signing of Association
Agreement between EU and Ukraine is possible only provided that there will be
strong readiness of Ukrainian government to sign this document and there will
be the real steps towards taking this decision.
European Commissioner though hasn’t receive any answer from Ukrainian
side yet, according to his statements.
Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister Sergiy Arbuzov in his turn assured after
his recent visit to Brussels that negotiations’ process is ongoing and that
Ukrainian authorities expect the Association Agreement to be signed probably
this spring.
US Senator from Republican Party John McCain though was surprised
hearing these news and stated there must have been mistake or misunderstanding
and it is really strange that EU decided to suspend process of European
integration with Ukraine. John McCain, who is currently in Ukraine since
Saturday, has expressed his total support of Ukrainian protesters and their
aspirations. He also stated earlier that US Senate is ready to vote for
resolution regarding Ukraine which includes also issues of imposing personal
sanctions against Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich, Prime Minister Mykola
Azarov and some other high ranking officials and Ukrainian oligarchs as well,
if Ukrainian authorities will net listen to their people’s demands and won’t
make any steps in order to resolve the current crisis.
John McCain along with other member of US Senate
Christopher Murphy has met on Sunday with Ukrainian oppositional leaders and
also with Ukrainian President. Previously on Sunday US senators held meeting
with Andriy Klyuev, Secretary of National Defense Council, but the details of
this meeting aren’t known yet.
