Ukrainian oppositional leader and ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko,
currently imprisoned, will be possibly able to travel abroad for the medical
treatment, as Ukrainian President Victor Yanukovich expressed his readiness to
resolve quickly the conflict with EU over Mrs. Tymoshenko’s imprisonment. Once
the decision will be taken Yulia Tymoshenko will be able to arrive in Berlin’s
Charité clinic for the treatment.
There is a possible way to resolve the conflict between EU and Ukraine
on the issue of Yulia Tymoshenko’s case, as Mr. Yunukovich stated on Friday, 11
October, during his meeting with several EU leaders and representatives that
his country is ready to take decision in order to resolve “this painful and
sensitive issue”, according to Russian media agency Interfax.
“I hope that we will find the common solution of this problem in the
nearest future”, stated Ukrainian President during his official meeting with
Czech EU-Commissar Stefan Füle. He didn’t specified though how exactly this
issue will be treated. But it is possible that the decision will be taken
during the Summit between Ukraine and EU on 28-29 November 2013, which could
result in the possibility of the signing of the Association Agreement with
Ukraine if all the requirements stated by EU will be fulfilled.
The issue of Yulia Tymoshenko’s imprisonment was also discussed during
the meeting between Victor Yanukovich and Guido Westerwelle, German Minister of
Foreign Affairs.

During the November Summit EU members are expected to take a decision
regarding the further cooperation with Ukraine and signing of the Association
Agreement which will make relationships between Ukraine and EU countries closer
and will develop their cooperation. But there are still many obstacles on this
path such as lack of democratic freedoms and rights of the citizens and problems
in the judicial system. EU is deeply concerned over the selective justice and
imperfect judicial system in the country which allows politically motivated
cases and imprisonments, such as the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and many other
oppositional leaders, like recently released ex-Interior Minister Yury
Lutsenko.
The issue of the Association Agreement is very important for Victor
Yanukovich and the current authorities as it could make the position of Ukraine
more independent from its Northern neighbor Russia and could help the
development of Ukrainian economical and social situation on the way to the
European Community.
But the situation with the signing of the Agreement remains difficult
until the case of the imprisoned Yulia Tymoshenko will not be resolved, so the
position of the European leaders.
Yulia Tymoshenko, ex-Prime Minister and charismatic and influential
oppositional leader is in detention since two years. European leaders see it as
politically motivated case and demand this problem to be resolved in order to
continue the cooperation with Ukraine on the path to EU.
It’s worth mentioning that Ukrainian President has recently dismissed
the Prosecutor General Deputy who was the main person in the prosecution of
Yulia Tymoshenko. At the same time European politicians sent the petition to
Ukrainian government calling for the solution of the Mrs. Tymoshenko’s case. In
addition to that Ukrainian authorities declared they will consider the possibility
of Yulia Tymoshenko’s treatment in Germany.
