Egypt’s ex-President Hosni Mubarak ousted in 2011 after 18-days uprising
against his rule faced on Sunday, 25 August, the sixth session of his retrial.
Hosni Mubarak is standing retrial in the case of killing the peaceful
demonstrators during January 25 Revolution in 2011. Egypt’s former President
faces these accusations together with his ex-Minister of Interior Habib El-Adly
and six aides, high ranking security forces officials. The historical trial of
the former President and his co-defendants was held in summer 2013 and in June
they’ve been announced guilty and received life in prison sentence. Though
later after the appeal of Hosni Mubarak’s lawyer Fareed El-Deeb Hosni Mubarak
and also Habib El-Adly and six aides have been granted retrial due to the new
evidences in the case and irregularities during the first trial.
Hosni Mubarak and his co-defendants could face death penalty in this
criminal case if convicted.
In addition to that Hosni Mubarak also stands trial in several
corruption charges along with his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, who appeared today
also in the court held in Cairo Police Academy under tight security measures.
It’s worth mentioning that Hosni Mubarak was released from prison on
Thursday after Cairo Northern Court has accepted his release appeal. According
to the Egyptian judicial system Hosni Mubarak has already spent the maximum
term in prison pending investigations. But Egypt’s ex-President remains under
house arrest due to the order issued by Egypt’s interim Prime Minister Hazem
El-Beblawy. On Thursday Hosni Mubarak was transferred from Tora Prison to Maadi
Military Hospital.
On Sunday the security measures have been tight in the area of the
Police Academy where the trial has been held, with the additional army and
security forces deployed to the area and the roads blocked to prevent the
possible clashes and riots during the trial.

Hosni Mubarak was transferred from the Military Hospital to the Police
Academy under the tight security measures, while other defendants, Habib
El-Adly, two sons of Mubarak and six aides, have been transferred to the court
building from Tora prison in southern Cairo.
The Court though took a decision to postpone the trial session until 14
September due to the appearance of the new evidences and information which
require to be studied.
Three special committees to study the separate cases have been formed by
the Court’s decision. One of them is tasked with the studying the new facts and
evidences in the case of killing the peaceful protesters in January-February
2011, another committee is expected to study the corruption charges and the
third one’s task is the gas deals made by Hosni Mubarak to sell natural gas to
Israel with the below-market prices.
In addition to that the defense teams of the defendants demanded the
questioning of some new witnesses in the cases including current Head of the
Armed Forces Abdel Fattah El-Sissi who was the Chief of Intelligence during the
January 25 Revolution.
Thus, the trial session was adjourned again till 14 September 2013.
