Egyptians protest against Muslim Brotherhood’s policies and prosecutor-general

Hundreds of protesters took on Friday to the streets of Cairo and other governorates to protest against the policies of Muslim Brotherhood and also against the current prosecutor-general and his decisions.

Egypt’s opposition led by the oppositional umbrella group National Salvation Front (NSF) has called earlier for the demonstrations to protests the so called “Brotherhoodisation” of the judiciary and to demand the dismissal of the current prosecutor-general Talaat Abdullah who was appointed by Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsy in November 2012 after he issued his controversial Constitutional Declaration widening his powers. The dismissal of the previous prosecutor-general Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud and the appointment of the new one is considered being unconstitutional, according to the opposition’s statements.

The Friday march also protested the recent decision and arrest warrants issued by Talaat Abdullah against several prominent oppositional and revolutionary activists accused of inciting violence during the clashes erupted at the Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in Moqattam. 

Oppositional and revolutionary groups and activists call is selective justice and protests against it rejecting also the dominating of Muslim Brotherhood in all the branches of state’s power in Egypt including judiciary.

The protests have been held in downtown Cairo, in front of the building of the High Court and also close to the office of Egypt’s prosecutor-general. The protests started peaceful, but later some clashes erupted as some of the demonstrators started to chant for the army to come back in power in attempt to resolve the current political crisis.

Some of the activists have been chanting “The people and the army are one hand!”, the slogan which was popular during the January 25 Revolution in 2011. Some of them explained their position stressing that only army could defend the country and find the way to end the deep crisis as it is called to protect the citizens of the country and isn’t affiliated to any of the main political powers in the country.

Those calls for the army coming back in power caused the clashes erupted between the protestors. There were also the reports about some minor clashes between anti-Muslim Brotherhood protesters and the group’s supporters.

Meanwhile the coastal city of Alexandria has experienced today the clashes erupted during the anti-Muslim Brotherhood protests as the protesters have been suddenly attacked by some unknown people, allegedly members of Muslim Brotherhood. People have been throwing the stones and Molotov cocktails at each other, so the police forces intervened firing the tear gas to disperse the crowds. Egypt’s Ministry of Health reported at least eight people injured as a result of the Friday’s clashes.

The same clashes have erupted also in another Egyptian city of Zagazig during the marches against the Brotherhood’s policies.

In addition to that there were the reports about the attempts to torch Muslim Brotherhood’s headquarters in the industrial city of Mahalla.
