Kofi Annan, UN and Arab League joint special envoy to Syria |
The United Nations and Arab League Syria envoy Kofi Annan resigned
yesterday. He announced that he is stepping down from his post and blamed major
international powers for this decision.
According to Jose Luis Diaz, Amnesty’s International Head of Office and
Representative at the United Nations, Kofi Annan’s resignation is a result of
the failure of the UN Security Council to act as a united body and in a strong
and decisive way in attempt to stop the ongoing violence in Syria.
The continuous blockings and vetoes of the UN Security Council decisions
and Arab League’s programs by China and Russia, who are also the permanent
members of the UN Security Council with the right of veto, it took almost on
year to try to find any decision to resolve the deep crisis in Syria. Meanwhile
the killings of the thousands of Syrian citizens continue till now under the
international law.
At the conference in Geneva Kofi Anna stated that Syrian people
desperately and urgently need action, while the members of UN Security Council
act in the way like they are guided more by political and strategic
considerations than by need to protect Syrian people and human rights in the
country.
While announcing his resignation Kofi Annan declared that he didn’t
receive all the support that the cause deserved and he also pointed out on the
numerous divisions within the Security Council of UN which are the serious
obstacle for diplomatic decisions and make the work of the mediator in such a
conflict hard and almost impossible.
Russian President Vladimir Putin already condemned such a decision taken
by Kofi Annan.
